HISTORY

Countries of ancient civilization, the crucible of the East and West, its geostrategic position in the Mediterranean, placed at the heart of history. At the crossroads of brilliant civilizations and diverse, the country was successively Punic, Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Arab-Muslim Ottoman Husaynid Beys and under French protectorate before becoming independent in 1956.

Elected by the Phoenicians, traders informed and skilled traders, they set in Carthage in 814 BC, the powerful Carthaginian empire whose prosperity depended on trade. With the installation of many commercial outlets whose influence on the Mediterranean was impressive, they have already attracted a taste of trade. This vocation of welcoming land, rich in assets, the country could not escape.

During the Roman period, its strong export business made it the granary of Rome. The industries of ceramics and processing of agricultural products were flourishing. The olive and wheat occupied a prominent place. From the Punic period to six centuries of Roman presence, this land has given birth to illustrious thinkers and figures of history: the Carthaginian Hannibal, one of the greatest military strategists of all time; Magon, the greatest agronomist Antiquity; Tertullian, the champion of religious tolerance ...

The Muslim civilization began from the seventh century, a period of golden age that brings a unity of language and faith and contribute to the development of agriculture, handicrafts, trade and shipbuilding. Kairouan was founded in 670 and becomes second largest city of the empire, the spiritual influence of his great minds: Ibn Khaldun, the founder of Human Sciences, Ibn Al-Jazzar, illustrious physician, Ibn Rachiq, poet and many of others. More contemporary among us, these figures: Sahnoun; Kheireddine; Tahar Haddad, the defender of women's rights; Chebbi, the champion of life and victory to the man in the service of men ...

More than elsewhere, this is woven the past and reflects its vocation to be a land of encounters, cooperation and friendship. It owes to the will of his men have managed to create a remarkable unity and a harmonious whole. The spirit of tolerance, determination to succeed and an unwavering zest for life are some salient features of the personality of Tunisia.
